Charyn Canyon

About Charyn Canyon
Charyn Canyon is a 154-kilometer long canyon on the Charyn River, about 200 kilometers east of Almaty. It is part of the Charyn National Park, which now features an eco-friendly visitor center. The canyon has been described as the Grand Canyon's "little brother" and is famous for its unique and colorful rock formations.
Historical Context
The canyon's sedimentary rocks are over 12 million years old. Over time, weathering has created dramatic and unusual shapes. The "Valley of Castles" is a particularly famous section, known for its pillar-shaped rock formations resembling ancient castles.

Most people visit as a long day trip from Almaty. Numerous tour agencies like "Almaty Tours" or "Kolsai Tours" offer group or private tours, often combining Charyn with Kolsai and Kaindy lakes. It is possible to stay overnight in yurts or guesthouses near the canyon.
