Tamgaly is a petroglyph site in the Zhetysu area of Kazakhstan. The name Tamgaly in Kazakh and other Turkic languages means "painted or marked place". The site features over 5,000 petroglyphs from the Bronze Age to the modern era, depicting animals, hunting scenes, and shamanic rituals.
Historical Context
The Petroglyphs of Tamgaly are a testament to the lives and beliefs of the ancient peoples who inhabited the region for millennia. The site was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 and is one of several such sites Kazakhstan is developing into a major tourist hub.
